The George F. Johnson Memorial Library in Endicott and Your Home Public Library in Johnson City receive most of their funding through a special assessment. The Union library tax was established a decade ago.

The libraries are seeking an increase from $1.5 million to $1.7 million.

The annual tax is tied to home assessments. The assessment remains the same from one year to the next unless voters approve a change.

The directors of the two town libraries say the additional funding would allow the facilities to continue existing services.

If the assessment hike isn't approve, the libraries might reduce services, hours and staff.

Voters in 2008 approved a town of Union library funding hike from $1.3 million to $1.5 million.

Library officials say the annual tax on a property assessed at $75,000 would increase by $5.31.

The library funding measure will appear as a proposition on next Tuesday's ballot in the town of Union.

There's more information about the tax proposal at the George F. Johnson Memorial Library and Your Home Public Library websites.
