“Tiger Park” Being Developed Next to Union-Endicott High School
Construction continues on a project to develop a park area and to restore the George F. Johnson monument in Endicott.
Endicott Rotary is working with the Union-Endicott School District on the restoration plan for the monument on East Main Street. The site is located between the high school and the district offices.
The Rotary organization has been seeking donations to pay for the restoration work, which had an initial cost estimate of $135,000.
The George F. Johnson monument has been sinking due to water damage. Steps and floor sections are to be reset. The planned work also will include the replacement of a cracked piece of granite. The statue of Johnson is to be refinished to the original brass.
A steel sculpture depicting two tigers now is located in front of the school district administration building. The monument eventually will be moved to the new Tiger Park, which is being developed around the monument.
The park will include an outdoor classroom and a picnic area.
Union-Endicott school superintendent Nicole Wolfe said a grand opening program is planned later this fall when the park is ready for visitors.
Mario Salati of Endicott Rotary said renovation work on the memorial is expected to start next spring or summer.
