A popular event and banquet venue in downtown Binghamton may soon have a new tenant.

The Terra Cotta Catering Event Center had hosted many events in the Stephens Square building at 81 State Street for more than a decade. The final event at the site apparently was held on New Year's Eve.

The building was acquired by BuBeds LLC for $2.3 million last March.

James Slocum, who has been developing a 102-bedroom student housing project at the site, said Terra Cotta Catering had a five-year lease which wasn't renewed.

Slocum said he expects another operator will soon take over the banquet hall and event space that had been utilized by Terra Cotta Catering. He said plans for that operation had not been finalized.

Slocum said work is proceeding on the student housing in the historic building and he expects the first residents may move in by the end of this month.

A Terra Cotta Catering representative has advised a prospective customer that the business is "going through a transition." The representative said Terra Cotta is looking for another venue but is continuing its catering services.

Terra Cotta Catering owners John and Suzanne Clark could not be reached Tuesday afternoon to discuss their plans for the business.
