Additional tax relief is being made available for low-income New Yorkers and families.

The State Department of Taxation and Finance will soon be sending out direct financial assistance to 1.75 million residents who receive the Empire State Child Credit and/or the Earned Income Credit on their 2021 state tax returns.  The checks should be received by the end of October.

Eligible New Yorkers don’t have to do anything. The checks will be mailed automatically.

Officials remind residents who have recently moved, they will want to update their address with the Department of Taxation and Finance to prevent any delay in receiving their Additional NYS Child and Earned Income Tax Payment checks to which they are entitled.

Residents can check their eligibility here.

Residents can create an account on the DTF website and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the required fields in order to save their update address information.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D-Buffalo)and legislative leaders on September 8 announced $475 in tax relief for eligible low-income New Yorkers was being made available with an average payment of $270 per eligible recipient.

In making the announcement, the Governor said: "This program will put money back in the pockets of nearly two million New York families struggling to make ends meet in the face of the pandemic, inflation, and other rising costs.”

Earlier this year, $2.2 billion in tax relief was announced through a new homeowner tax rebate credit.

Another tax break came in the statewide gas and diesel tax holiday. That tax suspension went into effect in June and will continue through the end of the year.
