SUNY Broome Community College will receive nearly $3 million in state funding for manufacturing training courses.

A consortium of schools that included SUNY Broome was awarded $15 million for an initiative to boost the Southern Tier economy.

College President Kevin Drumm says representatives of the region's manufacturing companies were consulted as part of the planning and research that went into the grant application process.

SUNY Broome is to use the state money to upgrade equipment and reconfigure existing spaces to reflect a contemporary manufacturing environment.

The college also plans to develop a simulated clean room to train students to work in a controlled environment.
