BU Baseball Stadium Construction May Start Within a Month
Crews are expected to begin building a baseball stadium complex on the Binghamton University campus in Vestal soon.
University President Harvey Stenger Friday said a construction contract has been signed and forwarded to Albany for final approval.
The complex is being built as the result of a $60 million gift announced by university officials last February.
Initial plans called for a quick construction start to enable the 84,000-square-foot facility to be ready for the 2021 baseball season. But bids under that aggressive timeline came in too high.
Stenger said the revised schedule calls for play to begin at the complex in 2022. He said bids for the work with the new timeline were "much lower."
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Stenger said the contractor is "ready to go." He said the contractor wants to get the project underway so as not to miss out on the summer construction season.
Stenger indicated he believes work could get underway within the next month.
The name of the donor covering the cost of the project has not been made public.
