Steel Frame Erected for Owego Aldi Store
The building that will house a new Aldi grocery store in Tioga County is taking shape.
Construction on the 19,600-square-foot structure on Route 17C in the town of Owego started in July.
The new Aldi store is being built on the site of the old Treadway Inn conference center. That facility, which opened in 1969, had attracted thousands of people over several decades for weddings, receptions, parties and other special events.
The conference center, which had featured two large ballrooms, meetings rooms and a restaurant, closed a couple of years ago. The building was demolished last spring to make way for the planned store.
Aldi representatives have indicated the Owego store may be able to open by the end of the year, although no specific target date has been announced.
The company's website currently lists one job for the Tioga County site - a full-time store associate.
The new store will be the first Tioga County operation for Aldi, which is based in Germany.
Three Aldi locations now operate in Broome County - in Vestal, Johnson City and the town of Chenango.
