Stay Cool This Summer: New York’s Assistance For Low-Income Families

The upcoming summer heat could be an issue for some New Yorkers. On April 15th,  New York State Governor Kathy Hochul held a press conference to announce some relief efforts set in place.

Applications are now being accepted, designed to assist low-income New Yorkers in staying cool this summer. The Program from the Home Energy Assistance Program is overseen by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Over 87,000 households have received cooling assistance totaling more than $67 million in the past five years.

According to Governor Hochul's announcement, the program will pay for an air conditioner for eligible households. To be eligible, the household must include someone who has a documented medical condition exacerbated by extreme heat, or households with young children under the age of 6 or older adults over the age of 60.

High temperatures and humidity in the summer pose a grave threat to those with certain medical conditions, as well as older adults and young children. This assistance is crucial for at-risk New Yorkers, and I encourage those who may be eligible to apply as soon as possible so they can stay cool in their home when the worst of the weather hits. The program covers the cost of an air conditioning unit and installation. Applicants will need to meet HEAP eligibility criteria and income thresholds. The Governor's Office notes an example: "A family of four may have a maximum gross monthly income of $6,390 or an annual gross income of $76,681, and still qualify."

The window for applications began on April 15th and will continue through the beginning of June 2025. Those who qualify will have their unit installed before summer heat and humidity arrive. The Governor's Office noted that assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
