Broome County is reporting ten new deaths associated with the COVID-19 pandemic since Christmas Eve as New York announces 140,000 residents have received the first vaccine dose against the virus to date.

Broome County December 28 reported 97 new cases for a total of 7,548 and 174 deaths. Chenango County added 88 cases for a total of 1,108 and 16 deaths. Cortland reported 23 new cases for a total of 2,338 and two more nursing home deaths reported to the state for a total number of deaths in the county at 34. Delaware county had 18 new cases for a total of 667 and 12 deaths and Tioga County added 27 cases from December 26 for a total of 1,626 and 64 deaths.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says the state expects to receive another 259 thousand doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines this week and will expand the priority populations eligible to receive a shot to include urgent care center employees, individuals administering the vaccines, including local health department staff and residents of state congregate facilities.

The vaccines are currently being distributed to high-risk hospital workers, federally qualified health center employees, Emergency Medical Services crews, coroners, medical examiners, funeral workers and residents and staff of Office for People with Developmental Disabilities and Office of Mental Health facilities.

The Governor says next week, ambulatory care workers and public-facing public health workers will be added.
