The group, which operates the Children’s Home in Hillcrest, announced plans to purchase the building after the Boys and Girls Club abruptly closed in August 2019.

The purchase process has been moving along for about five months and the facility has been maintained by Broome County to keep the building from deteriorating.

The Children’s Home plans to operate the location as the Southern Tier Community Center and provide a number of the programs that had been a main-stay of the Boys and Girls Club, including after school programs and child care as well as community health programs and swimming.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says he’s not sure if the purchase and start of the new operations will mean another venue for child care will be available in time for the next waves of planned business reopening under the easing of the coronavirus emergency shutdowns.
