A 25-year lease extension has been announced between the city of Binghamton and Ross Park Zoo.

The Southern Tier Zoological Society operates the zoo and the associated park on Morgan Road on the city's South Side.

The announcement of the extension was made Thursday afternoon by Mayor Richard David and zoo executive director Phillip Ginter.

The zoological society has overseen the operation and maintenance of the Ross Park Zoo for more than four decades.

A master plan for the facility is being developed. The goal is to develop "a blueprint for future upgrades at the park and grant opportunities."

The zoo now is open on Saturday and Sunday. It's scheduled to operate seven-days-a-week after the Memorial Day weekend.
