Days after being fired as Binghamton economic development director, Robert Murphy has been chosen for a top Broome County government post.

County Executive Jason Garnar has announced Murphy has been appointed director of the Office of Employment and Training.

Murphy was dismissed as city economic development chief by Mayor Richard David just before Thanksgiving. The mayor said Murphy was removed from the job following the discovery of an improper fund transfer from a Binghamton Local Development Corporation account.

Murphy succeeds Sara Liu, who left the employment and training job to manage her restaurant and catering business.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Tuesday, Garnar said Murphy is the best person for the job. He said several other candidates had been interviewed for the position over the last several weeks.

Garnar said Murphy will start working as director immediately. His appointment must be approved by the county legislature.
