Special events are being held in downtown Binghamton in conjunction with the sesquicentennial of the conclusion of the American Civil War in 1865.

The Civil War Family Day will be held at the Phelps Mansion Museum on Court Street on Sunday, April 26 from noon to 4 p.m. The event will feature Civil War reenactors and exhibits inside and on the lawn of the mansion.

A Civil War play will be presented at the Phelps Mansion on Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m.

Binghamton author David Cleutz discussed the Civil War and how local men played a key role in it during an interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program. Cleutz told the story of how Colonel David Ireland and his 137th New York Volunteers made some important and heroic contributions. Ireland is buried in Spring Forest Cemetery in Binghamton's First Ward.
