Three Southern Tier School districts are using food from regional farms in their cafeterias under the pilot ‘Sustaining Farm to School in New York State' program.

Cafeterias in the Binghamton, Johnson City and Owego-Apalachin school districts have been serving tomatoes, apples and romaine lettuce from Benton Berries in Penn Yan, Reisinger’s Apple Country in Watkins Glen and Main Street Farms in Homer.

The contracts with the regional growers are the first of their kind for Broome-Tioga BOCES.

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier has been assisting with some of the transportation of produce through its already established distribution system.
