Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross says it assisted seven residents in a Thorp Street, Binghamton fire March 2 but that is only the tip of the iceberg over the past several weeks.

The charity has responded to six multi-family fires and four single family fires involving 28 people since February 1.

The Red Cross says it has provided $5,336 dollars in financial assistance.

Contributions can be made to the Red Cross online at redcross.org.

The Red Cross is also encouraging people to check their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills.

Free smoke detectors are also being provided to homes that need them.  For information on that program, call (607) 785-7207 or email to smokealarms@redcross.org.
