Drivers in downtown Binghamton will be dealing with a major infrastructure project that will result in changing traffic patterns through fall.

Work on the $3.9 million reconstruction job on State Street between Henry and Lewis streets began last week. Vacri Construction Corporation of Binghamton is the contractor for the job.

Mayor Jared Kraham visited the project site Monday morning. He said the planned work is expected to be completed at the end of the construction season.

The street project is being done in conjunction with the development of a special district highlighting downtown entertainment and cultural organizations. The city is calling it the Arts DECO District.

Kraham said the creation of the district will help to encourage more people to visit downtown galleries and performing arts venues. He said "we want people to come from out of the area (and) from inside Broome County" to enjoy Binghamton's special attractions.

The mayor said the State Street project "is just the first phase" of planned downtown improvements.

Kraham said work is planned in future construction seasons on Henry Street, Washington Street and Water Street.
