Rare May Weather Advisory Possible for Twin Tiers

The National Weather Service in Binghamton says it may have to do something it rarely has to do: issue a winter weather advisory in May. 

While that hasn’t happened yet, forecasters say there is a possibility of a rare May snowfall bringing several inches of accumulation at higher elevations Friday evening and night.

Officials are only saying several inches of snow could fall at higher elevations over 15-hundred feet. That could include areas in the Catskills or Pocono Mountains.  But there could be lower amounts of snow sticking to the ground in the lower elevations overnight Friday.

The weather service says snow squalls are possible during the day May 9 with gusty winds and brief, near whiteout conditions possible across Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania.

The lows for the region Friday night are projected to be in the upper 20s with a high on Saturday only in the upper 30s.

Any late season cold weather and snow could be devastating to fruit crops this year as many trees are starting to bud and blossom right now.
