Rabies Alert In Chenango County New York
The Chenango County Department of Public Health issued a rabies alert notice on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
According to the release, a raccoon in the county tested positive for rabies. The animal was located on Tamarac Road in the Preston Township of Chenango County. The New York State Wadsworth Laboratory confirmed the results.
The Chenango County Department of Public Health is advising people in the area to take precautions. They advise not to pick up or handle any stray or wild animals.
Report any animals that are observed to be behaving strangely or aggressively to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office or the Chenango County Health Department at (607) 337-1673. Also, do not attempt to feed, approach, or touch wild animals.
Report any animal bites and scratches to the Chenango County Health Department or your local health care provider. If you are bitten or scratched, wash and rinse the wound thoroughly for several minutes, apply a disinfectant, and seek medical attention immediately.

The Chenango County Health Department has some other good tips, including teaching children about the dangers of stray and wild animals and being sure all your pets and livestock are vaccinated against rabies. If your pet or livestock is behaving strangely contact your veterinarian immediately.
This advice is a good reminder for anytime you observe an animal acting strangely or aggressively. If you observe this happening, contact your local health department as soon as possible.
