State environmental regulators held a meeting to discuss the future of a pollution cleanup project at a former IBM facility in Endicott.

The site off North Street in the village had been used for decades by IBM for manufacturing operations.

The public meeting on the environmental issues related to the property was held at the George F. Johnson Memorial Library on Park Street.

According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, the area is on the list of New York state Superfund sites.

Environmental officials have determined the site represents a significant threat to public health or the environment.

A proposed "action plan" for the site calls for the monitoring of groundwater and soil vapor to "ensure continued progress in reduction of the plume" of potentially hazardous chemicals.

Under the plan, vapor mitigation systems in nearby buildings would continue to be maintained by IBM.

Studies around the former factory concluded releases of industrial solvents during manufacturing operations at the IBM plant affected groundwater on the site.

The investigation revealed contaminated groundwater spread southward from the plant to private properties. Chemical vapors from groundwater then migrated into soil above the potentially toxic plume.

State regulators are accepting written comments about the "action plan" through March 29.

Documents about the Superfund project and efforts to address the environmental and health issues caused by the contamination are available at the Endicott library.

Project documents also are available at the Department of Environmental Conservation website.
