Residents and businesses affected by flooding that use propane are advised by the New York Propane Gas Association to check for visible damage to their tanks.

If there is a gas smell when returning, make sure all smoking materials and flames are extinguished, exit the building immediately and do not operate electrical switches or use cell phones. Call authorities immediately from outside the building.

Do not relight pilot lights for equipment that has been flooded. Shut off the service valve at the tank and contact your provider or a qualified technician.

Flooded tanks should be inspected before going back into service.

The New York Propane Gas Association says information on propane and flood safety can be found at www.propanenewyork.com, www.propanecomfort.com and www.ready.gov/floods.
