A long-time restaurant on Binghamton's East Side is building an outdoor seating area.

Colleen Cortese of Cortese Restaurant on Robinson Street said construction work on the project began recently. It's expected to be completed in a few weeks.

Cortese said the dining area will be covered by a roof and surrounded by a short wall. She said there will be heaters and some sun shades.

The 18-foot by 16-foot patio-style addition is being built along the west side of the restaurant.

Cortese said a temporary outdoor seating area had proven popular with many diners when it was set up last year shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic required health precautions.

Cortese Restaurant has been a fixture at the Robinson Street site since it opened in 1947.
