The specialized team was called by city police to a laundromat at Main and Edwards streets early Friday morning.

Police arrested a man on a warrant around 3 a.m. He was taken into custody without incident but officers were concerned because he had a backpack believed to be filled with meth-making gear.

The backpack sat next to the laundromat until the state police unit arrived to remove the items.

A crew from the city fire department was placed on stand-by at the scene. All of the potentially-hazardous materials were removed by 7:45 a.m.

Edwards Street between Main and North streets was closed for nearly five hours. There was no disruption of Main Street traffic.

Investigators at police headquarters were interviewing the man to determine what charges would be filed.
