Broome County Sheriff David Harder and Endicott Police are among those noting the messages on TikTok that appear to have started in California mentioning shootings and bombings planned for Friday, December 17 at schools nationwide.
Police say they have found no link to local schools and no evidence the threat is credible.
It’s not known exactly where or why the posts began but police agencies from big cities like Chicago to small communities have been taking the issue seriously and are assuring their communities that they remain vigilant. Some schools across the country have reportedly planned lockdowns or canceled classes. Some authorities have speculated that the posts started as a way to play on anxiety about past shooting incidents merely as a way for students to skip school.
In a statement released December 16, Sheriff Harder encourages the public to report any suspicious activity to police immediately.
