City officials say repaving work is underway on Main Street in Binghamton.

A microsurfacing process is planned for the nearly-two-mile segment from Front Street to the Johnson City line.

Officials say drivers should use alternate routes to avoid delays in the work zone this week.

Two-way traffic is expected to be maintained while the resurfacing project is being done. The work should be completed by the end of the week.

According to city officials, microsurfacing involves the application of a thin layer of asphalt to the roadway to extend its life. The process is said to seal out moisture while providing a smoother surface.

The microsurfacing technique was used on Clinton Street in the First Ward about one year ago.
