Sneak Peak: The Pad Climbing Gym in Vestal Nearing Completion
The much-anticipated opening of a Broome County indoor recreational climbing facility now appears to be just days away.
Construction work for The Pad Climbing gym in Vestal is in its final stages. The new 16,000-square-foot facility will be located at 2220 Vestal Road, which had been home to the Edge sports complex.
Co-owner Yishai Horowitz said there's been a "great response" from Binghamton-area residents who have been looking forward to a climbing destination.
Horowitz told WNBF News about 160 people have pre-registered to be among the first who will have an opportunity to visit The Pad Climbing site.
He said about 30 people have been hired to work at the facility when it opens. There's no firm target date for starting operations but he expects a soft opening will occur before Christmas.
The Pad's specially-designed climbing walls were manufactured by a Bulgarian company. Workers from that company were busy assembling the wall sections in Vestal in recent weeks.
Most of the activities will be indoors, although there also will be an outdoor slackline.
Horowitz anticipates the climbing facility will appeal to many young people, including Binghamton University students. He said there also will be special programs for kids.
The Pad Climbing gym will be open around-the-clock for use by members.
