Popular Owego Home Improvement Store Closes

Customers and employees are expressing disappointment with the decision to shut down a Tioga County hardware and home improvement store.

The Valu Home Center on Route 17C in the town of Owego closed its doors permanently at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Last March, a Grand Union supermarket in the same plaza went of business. The Owego Pharmacy and a Dollar General store are the only remaining tenants at the site.

The Valu Home Center was popular among Owego-area residents because of what customers described as a friendly and helpful staff.

A Valu Home Center in Cortland also closed recently.

Representatives of the Buffalo-based company that operates Valu Home Centers did not return phone calls seeking information on the latest store closings.

The company still operates about two dozen other stores in upstate New York.

Sections of the shopping plaza in the town of Owego sustained significant damage due to flooding in September 2011.

The property is owned by an entity based in New Hartford. A representative of the owners in May said they were seeking a net tenant to fill the space that had been occupied by the Grand Union store.

A listing by a real estate company said the site would be "suitable for retail, office, or medical users."
