Owego Apalachin Poll Shows Clear Winner for New Mascot Name
A decision on a new mascot name for the Owego Apalachin Central School District is expected to be announced soon.
An Owego Free Academy student committee has been working on the process of selecting a replacement for the "Indians" nickname. That name no longer may be used because of a ban approved by the state Board of Regents in April.
The student panel reviewed many potential mascot names submitted by members of the school community. The group narrowed down the responses and conducted several polls.
The committee set up a final online poll with three possible new mascot names: Mustangs, Ospreys and River Hawks.
According to the school district website, with more than 1,000 responses counted, the clear choice was "River Hawks" with support from 67% of those who expressed an opinion. "Ospreys" received 17% of the vote and "Mustangs" received 15%.
The Owego Apalachin Board of Education heard a presentation about the poll results at its Monday evening meeting.
The student advisory committee is expected to meet again to review the process with a final recommendation anticipated before the start of the new school year in two weeks.
Under the state directive, school districts have until the end of the 2024-2025 academic year to remove and replace names, logos and imagery that has been banned.
