Orlando Tercero Guilty of Killing BU Student Haley Anderson
Former Binghamton University student Orlando Tercero has been found guilty of femicide in the March 2018 death of fellow student Haley Anderson.
A Nicaraguan judge announced her verdict in the case Friday afternoon.
The 22-year-old Anderson's body was discovered in Tercero's apartment on Oak Street on Binghamton's West Side. Investigators said Tercero fled the United States shortly after he killed Anderson.
Closing arguments in Tercero's trial in Nicaragua were delayed for a short time Friday following an earthquake.
Although the trial was conducted in the defendant's home country, a video link permitted witness testimony to be given from the Broome County district attorney's office in Binghamton.
Tercero, who is now 23 years old, has dual U.S. and Nicaraguan citizenship. Nicaragua rejected requests to allow him to return to New York state to face trial.
Binghamton police investigators said they found a note - allegedly written by Tercero - near Anderson's body. It read: "I never imagined doing this. I'm sorry."
