Thousands of New York State Electric and Gas customers remained without electric service as a result of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Utility crews were making progress in restoring power but their job may not be completed for a few more days.

As of two o'clock Monday afternoon, NYSEG reported more than 23,000 customers in six counties had no electricity.

Just east of Broome County, 717 customers in Delaware County were without power. Many of those affected customers were in the town of Hancock. Some of them were advised their electricity might not be restored until late Wednesday night.

More than a third of NYSEG's 32,000 Westchester County customers were listed as still being without electric service.

Storm-related outages also remained an issue in Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster counties.
