A New York State Supreme Court judge has ruled that the City of Binghamton's moratorium on hydraulic fracturing for natural gas cannot stand.

The City's moratorium was put into place back in December of 2011. Several landowners took the decision to the state Supreme Court to try and get it overruled.

High-volume hydraulic fracturing has been a hot button issue in the region for years. Opponents of fracking say that there isn't enough evidence to prove that it is safe for the environment.  Supporters of the controversial process say that the Southern Tier and beyond would economically benefit from natural gas exploration.
