A review of Covid-19 deaths in New York state nursing homes has concluded that many more residents have died than the numbers that have been publicly reported.

Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday said an investigation revealed a larger number of nursing home residents died from the coronavirus than the numbers released by state officials.

James concluded the number of deaths may have been undercounted by as much as 50 percent.

The attorney general also said the review found many nursing homes failed to comply with critical infection control policies, putting residents at increased risk of harm.

James said investigations are underway into more than 20 nursing homes whose conduct early in the pandemic "presented particular concern."

The attorney general said nursing home residents and workers "deserve to live and work in safe environments."

Assemblyman Joseph Angelino, a Norwich Republican, expressed shock at the report's findings. In a statement, he said the state has "broken the trust of people" by failing to protect nursing home residents from Covid-19.

Angelino called for removing the governor's emergency powers "so there can be legislative oversight" in the state's handling of the pandemic.
