New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed the first domestic terrorism law in the nation to include mass violence motivated by hate.

Under the “Hate Crimes Domestic Terrorism Act”, mass shootings against a group of people based on their actual or perceived race, religion, gender or national origin is punishable by up to life in prison without parole.

Cuomo is calling on Congress to enact a similar law on the federal level.

The Democrat says that should include banning weapons used to carry out those crimes including military-style assault weapons and high capacity magazines.  Cuomo is also calling for the enacting of universal background checks.
