Governor Kathy Hochul, ahead of the January 5 State of the State address is taking a step that is bound to not sit well with some politicians who have spent decades in office.

The Democrat says she wants New York to impose term limits on her office, Lieutenant Governor, Comptroller and other statewide elected officials and ban them from earning an outside income.

Those changes are an implicit rebuke of her predecessor, Democrat, Andrew Cuomo, who was a three-term governor. The lawmaker from western New York didn’t mention Cuomo in her announcement saying she is asking for an amendment to the New York State constitution to put a limit of two consecutive terms for governors, lieutenant governors, attorneys general and comptrollers.

Hochul is also Democrat who took office in August after Cuomo stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations.

She issued a statement Monday, December 3 saying the proposals are aimed at restoring trust and integrity in state government. Cuomo was elected to a third term in 2018 but resigned before finishing. He was widely expected to run for a fourth term before the scandal broke and forced him to step aside.

Meanwhile, the state ethics commission is seeking to have Cuomo turn over income from his book on leadership under allegations that he used paid staff members on state time to help him work on his book.

Governor Hochul will deliver her first State of the State address in the New York State Assembly Chambers.  It's the first time in 10 years a sitting governor will deliver the State of the State from inside the Assembly chamber.

The speech is expected to be given at around 1 p.m.
