Tioga County's public transportation system will shut down at the end of the week.

County lawmakers voted in September to pull the plug on Ride Tioga, which has been operated under contract by First Transit.

Tioga officials say the service was no longer viable because of changes made in state reimbursement policy for transporting Medicaid patients.

Legislature chairwoman Martha Sauerbrey last month said options were being explored to work with Broome, Tompkins and Chemung counties in an effort to help Tioga bus users. But no agreements have been announced, so people who've utilized Ride Tioga will have to fend for themselves.

The Ride Tioga website lists local transportation links which might be useful to people who had been using the county bus service.

Ride Tioga buses will stop running at the end of business on Friday.
