The trial of a former Binghamton University student in connection with the death of Haley Anderson is about to get underway in Nicaragua.

Investigators have said 23-year-old Orlando Tercero is suspected of killing Anderson in his apartment on Binghamton's West Side before leaving the United States to head to his native Nicaragua.

The body of the 22-year-old Anderson was discovered inside 23 Oak Street on March 9, 2018. Anderson also was a Binghamton University student.

According to a Nicaraguan news account, the indictment alleges Tercero left Anderson's body on a bed in his apartment, along with a note that read, "I never imagined doing this. I'm sorry."

Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell said Tercero's trial is scheduled to start Tuesday.

A statement issued by Cornwell indicated all witnesses will be in Broome County and will testify from his office via a video stream to the courtroom in Nicaragua.

Cornwell said he will ask the Nicaraguan judge to allow news media to view the video stream. He said if the judge grants permission, a request will be made to allow audio and visual coverage.

A pre-trial conference is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Tuesday Binghamton time. The trial is expected to begin shortly after the conference has concluded.
