New York is dangling a golden carrot in front of stragglers who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced anyone who gets vaccinated at select state-run vaccination sites in New York next week will receive a lottery scratch ticket with prizes potentially worth up to five million dollars.

Many localities, states and even businesses around the country have been offering incentives for people to get the vaccine ranging from free beer with the shot to tickets to major sporting events and even cash.

Broome and Tioga Counties are among Southern Tier governments working to make it as easy as possible for people to access the vaccination with pop up clinics and programs where medical professionals will travel to business and organizations or even to the homes of shut-ins to administer the shots.  Pop-up clinics  have been set up in recent weeks in places like a park in Norwich and the parking lot of NYSEG Stadium and Pfizer shots have been taken to high schools to vaccinate the latest group approved to get the shot: children aged 15 to 17.

As New York State tries to boost slowing vaccination rates. Governor Cuomo said the pilot vaccination lottery program would be at 10 state-run sites and offer prizes from $20 up to $5 million and run from Monday, May 24 to Friday, May 28. The closest state site to participate in the chance to win money is at the site at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

The governor says there’s a one in nine chance of winning a scratch ticket prize in New York, which is joining states like Ohio that have similar lottery incentives. About 43% of state residents are fully vaccinated.

Not surprising, the incentive leaves people who already got vaccinated scratching their heads instead of lottery tickets, wondering where's their reward for getting their shot when they were just encouraged to do so.

Of course, the Governor commented that everyone is really a winner by getting vaccinated against the deadly virus.
