New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Hosts Governors for Vape & Pot Conference
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is telling fellow Democrat governors that the states have to take up the mantle of regulating marijuana and vaping since the federal government has not been doing it.
Governors from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut and legislative leaders from Rhode Island and Massachusetts met at Cuomo’s offices in New York City October 17 to discuss a collaborative joint regional approach to cannabis and vaping.
Cuomo’s office says following the summit, the Governors reached a set of core principles related to market regulation, public health, safety and enforcement and vaping best practices.
The meeting comes as there continues to be a rising death toll and serious health consequences associated with e-cigarettes and as people cross state lines to access legal cannabis were local regulations allow. The lawmakers not only heard from Massachusetts, which legalized marijuana, but also from Colorado, which has been getting continued national attention for its liberal policies regarding recreational and medicinal marijuana.
While a good portion of the discussion in the day-long session focused on the marijuana issue, lawmakers also looked at New York’s recent ban on flavored vaping products, which is currently hung up in the courts with a lack of supporting action coming from Washington.
