New York Dept. Education Pulls Plug on January Regents Exams
The Interim Commissioner for the New York State Education Department says there will be no Regents Exam this coming January.
Betty Rosa November 5 sent a memorandum to school district superintendents informing them the state’s benchmark academic exam was not going to be administered in January 2021 due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The school year was abruptly disrupted last March when the coronavirus infection exploded in the state, forcing schools to scramble to allow instruction to continue through remote, online means.
Rosa says she will ask the Board of Regents to adopt adjustments as emergency regulations in setting the graduation requirements for students who, otherwise, would be working toward a Regents diploma.
The Department still has not made any decisions about the June and August 2021 Regents Exams or other state assessment programs.
