New Stores Opening at Old Binghamton West Side Business Sites
Two spots that had been home to longtime businesses in Binghamton are about to get a new life.
A building on Main Street on the city's West Side where Binghamton Fluorescent Company had operated for more than four decades was acquired by a Vestal man last year.
Tony Singh purchased the site at 229 Main Street last March. He's preparing to open a convenience store and gas station on the property.
Renovation work at the building has been underway over the past few months. Two large gasoline storage tanks were buried on the east side of the property in September.
Singh told WNBF News most of the necessary preparations inside and outside have been completed. He said utility work remains to be finished and gas pumps should be installed soon.
Singh said he hopes the store will be able to open around mid-February.
While work continues on the Main Street building, the site of another well-known Binghamton business is undergoing a transformation.
A new store is expected to open soon where the family-owned Cavanaugh's Grocery & Deli had operated at 69 Leroy Street.
City councilman Robert Cavanaugh II decided to close the business last summer. The store had been a fixture in the neighborhood for more than 75 years.
Cavanaugh said the 1,100-square-foot space that had been occupied by the shop is being renovated. He didn't identify who is leasing the site but he said a new neighborhood store could open there sometime next month.
