Transportation planners will be looking at the possibility of installing new roundabouts in the city of Binghamton.

The New York State Department of Transportation is in the process of developing designs for the Route 363 Gateway Project.

The agency recently held an informational meeting to present an overview of the planned reconstruction of the downtown connector roadway, which was built more than 50 years ago.

DOT regional director Jack Williams said roundabouts and intersection improvements will be considered as part of the new configuration.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Williams said it's not clear yet exactly where roundabouts may be proposed.

In addition to constructing roundabouts, some bridges may be removed as part of the gateway project. The goal will be to provide enhanced safety and access for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.

The city now has only one roundabout. The Court Street roundabout at Chenango and Exchange streets opened to traffic in August 2012.

The number of roundabouts in New York state has risen dramatically in recent years. According to state statistics, there were only 18 roundabouts in New York in 2005. A decade later, the number had jumped to 112.
