People opposed to a plan to put parking spaces at the site of a downtown Binghamton courtyard are calling on the city to consider other options.

Some of those fighting the project say they intend to hold a free-form event on the Washington Street pedestrian mall Friday evening.

Musicians, street performers and interactive activities are planned on the site, which is outside the Court Street entrance to the MetroCenter. The event is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Organizers plan to solicit design ideas and suggestions for the space and forward them to city officials.

Tarik Abdelazim, a former city director of planning, housing and community development, said the public space "needs to be improved." But he criticized what he described as a "wasteful and poorly designed parking lot."

Abdelazim is encouraging city officials to work with residents to develop an alternative "that prioritizes people over cars."

Although the parking project has been stalled, Mayor Richard David has said he hopes that it will move forward at some point.
