Plans Detailed for New Use of Old CVS Store Near Binghamton Plaza

A new use is being proposed for an abandoned chain pharmacy store in Binghamton.

The CVS Pharmacy at 34 West State Street on the city's North Side was closed in March 2022.

The Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier is planning to develop a new facility at the site of the old store.

The Binghamton-based agency wants to establish a supportive crisis stabilization center in the building, which it acquired last year for $450,000.

Agency executive director Megan Crowe outlined the proposed project for members of the city planning commission during a Tuesday meeting.

Crowe said the facility will serve as an alternative to people "in crisis" in an eight-county region. She said the center initially will be able to accommodate five adult and five youth or children patients at a time.

Crowe said the facility would be a resource for area law enforcement agencies and could reduce the use of hospital emergency rooms. She said the center would be staffed every day around-the-clock.

Crowe said there is "room for future growth" for the facility at the West State Street building.

The planning commission has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed project for April 2.
