Binghamton University has a new Assistant Dean of Students for Off Campus Programs who is vowing to make student safety away from the Vestal campus a priority.

Milton Chester introduced himself to Binghamton City Council as more student housing downtown is scheduled to open in upcoming weeks.

Chester says he’s been talking with Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski and several ideas have emerged including regular briefings for students and possible creation of a text alert system for students living off-campus.

Several students, living both on and off campus, have admitted to being unaware of what is going on in the community. That ranges from information about crime to even fun events like local festivals.

There have been suggestions presented regarding more bus stops downtown and providing an escort system between the bus stops and the off-campus student housing.
