The Humane Society in Binghamton has dozens of cats and dogs in its shelter waiting to be adopted.

For the next few weeks, area residents who would like to provide a safe home for one of these animals may benefit from a price-break on the usual adoption fee.

Normally, an adoption fee of $65 to $187 would be charged for a dog or cat from the Binghamton shelter. But the Humane Society has launched what it bills as a "Name-Your-Own-Price Adopt-a-thon" to make it more affordable for people to acquire a pet.

Prospective pet owners may make a selection from the 50 dogs and 90 cats now in the shelter on the city's South Side and make an offer.

The Humane Society's facility is at 2 Jackson Street in Binghamton. It's open from noon to 5:00 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm Saturdays.
