New York State Police say there has been an influx of reports of counterfeit $100 bills in the region starting last February.

Troopers from Margaretville in February responded to businesses in Arkville and Margaretville on two separate dates where a woman used counterfeit $100 bills to make small purchases and get large amounts of legitimate money back in change.

In late March and April Troopers from Binghamton, Deposit and Marathon all responded to reports of a man going into Dollar General stores and using several fake $100 bills to buy gift cards.

Some store employees caught the fakes and refused the purchase but other cases were successful with the bank notifying stores after their deposits were made.

Residents are told not to put themselves in danger but quickly report to law enforcement with descriptions of suspects, vehicles and license plates.
