Mayor Richard David wants to know more about why the decision was made for the Binghamton Devils to play their upcoming American Hockey League games in Newark.

The league has granted a "provisional relocation" to the Devils allowing home games to be held starting next month in New Jersey instead of Binghamton.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said that move represents a "huge loss" to the city and the region.

Based on news reports, the mayor said the decision not to play in Binghamton appeared to be based primarily on financial considerations and not specifically due to Covid-19 health concerns.

During the live interview, David said he wanted to know "what did the county do or not do in order to try to resolve" some of the issues that were involved in deciding where the Devils would play.

The AHL season is expected to start February 5. A statement from the league said the schedule has not been finalized.
