Endicott Police say a 39-year-old man is dead in a fire at the apartment he shared with his fiancée yesterday.

When firefighters arrived at the scene on Exchange Avenue at about 5:43 a.m. January 12, they found heavy smoke and flames in one apartment.

Endicott Police say Michael Kelley was found by his fiancée, Tasheane Johnson collapsed on the steps in front of the apartment.

Johnson and a neighbor pulled Kelley away from the unit but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was confined to his apartment but other units had smoke and water damage.

The American Red Cross assisted residents of the building.

Investigators from Broome County Emergency Services are working to determine the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in the kitchen.
