Authorities say 25-year-old Juan Lopez-Laboy turned himself in at police headquarters late Monday night.

Lopez-Laboy was formally charged with second-degree murder around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators believe Lopez-Laboy stabbed 31-year-old Santos Echevarria once during a dispute outside the Town and Country apartment complex on Robert Street.

Echevarria had been taken from a parking lot where the attack occurred early Sunday by the time police officers arrived at the scene. He died a short time later at Lourdes Hospital on Riverside Drive.

Lopez-Laboy also had fled by the time police arrived. Investigators on Monday afternoon announced he was a "person of interest" in the case. He surrendered to police shortly before midnight.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said Lopez-Laboy turned himself in because he knew detectives were looking for him.

People with additional information about the case may contact the Binghamton police detective division at 607.772.7080.
