Authorities say 51-year-old Nathan Walz was arrested Thursday by investigators from the Broome County District Attorney's Office and the Vestal Police Department.

Prosecutors say Walz is accused of stealing about $250,000 from Grace Lutheran Church. The town of Owego man allegedly wrote checks from the church bank account to his personal bank account.

Investigators say Walz was the treasurer and assistant treasurer at the church between January 2012 and this month when the thefts are believed to have occurred.

Walz was arraigned in Vestal town court Thursday evening. He was sent to Broome County Jail without bail.

The Grace Lutheran Church at 709 Main Street in Vestal was destroyed by fire on May 18, 2015. The church is in the process of building a new facility.
