A big sign has been installed and other finishing touches are being made to a massive facility being built for FedEx east of Binghamton.

The 458,000-square-foot sorting and distribution center is being constructed on Industrial Park Drive in the town of Kirkwood. The site was used for decades by Link and L-3 Communications.

The project was approved by the Kirkwood planning board in January 2021. Demolition of the abandoned facility started in the spring of last year.

The new FedEx Ground distribution center is being constructed a short distance from the site of a FedEx Freight trucking terminal. That facility was shut down just over five years ago.

FedEx Ground spokesman David Westrick previously had said basic construction on the new Kirkwood complex was expected to be completed by July 1. He had said the facility was scheduled to start operations in October.

Westrick recently provided an update by email: "We are on target for the fall opening."

Kirkwood officials have said the FedEx Ground facility could create 100 jobs. Westrick would not reveal how many people will work at the site.

Delta Engineers of Endwell performed design work for the project. Gorick Construction and Pritchard Development of Binghamton have been constructing the facility.
